Download Microsoft Office 2013 for Windows: Everything from Word to Outlook is ready for access with a Microsoft 365 subscription

Microsoft Office 2013 is available for download on Windows, offering all the usual tools you'd expect from the Office suite. Unlike Microsoft 365, which requires a subscription, this version of Office 2013 is a one-time purchase that gives you lifetime access to the complete set of Office apps. There are three different editions, each with its own price and set of features.

Features and functionalities: What you can expect with Microsoft Office 2013 on Windows

Microsoft Office 2013 comes in twelve different versions. There are three for retail and two for volume licensing. Microsoft 365 also offers five subscription-based plans. There is a free web version called Office Web Apps and the Office RT version for tablets and mobile devices. Office Web Apps are free online, but businesses can pay for installations at their place of business. You can also purchase licenses for individual Office apps like Microsoft Visio, Project, and SharePoint Designer, which aren’t part of the twelve other editions. The different plans can vary with price since editions that offer access to more products are more expensive.

Office 2013 has five different editions for traditional license purchases by an individual, each tailored to different needs:

  • Home & Student: Perfect for basic use, it includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
  • Home & Business: Adds Outlook to the core apps from the Home & Student edition.
  • Standard: Available only through volume licensing, it includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, and Publisher.
  • Professional: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, and Access.
  • Professional Plus: The most feature-heavy version, adding InfoPath and Lync on top of everything in the Professional edition.

If you want to subscribe through a Microsoft 365 plan, there are two subscription categories: Consumer plans and Business plans. Under the Consumer umbrella, you can choose from Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Family.

  • Microsoft 365 Personal: Access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, and Access. You can access this software on up to five devices, whether computers, phones, or tablets. Includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage and a full hour of international calls on Skype.
  • Microsoft 365 Family: This gives you access to the same software as Microsoft 365 Personal, but it’s designed for use by a family. You can have up to six users working on as many as five devices per person, and each person gets the same quantity of OneDrive storage and international calls on Skype.

The core programs of Microsoft Office are some of the most recognizable productivity software in the world. You’re probably familiar with most of the names, and each has tools designed to help create and collaborate.

  • Microsoft Word: Word is easily the most popular word processor out there. Now, it's ready to download for free on Windows. Create and format documents to your liking, work with coworkers or classmates in real-time, get help from AI with Microsoft Editor, and easily add multimedia. Considering its popularity, you are likely already familiar with the layout and tools offered by Word.
  • Microsoft Excel: Analyze and organize data with spreadsheets, tables, and formulas. Use pivot tables to present complex data in simple terms, and automate your spreadsheet with formulas to simplify complex calculations.
  • Microsoft PowerPoint: Create, edit, and share slideshows and presentations featuring eye-catching fonts, transitions from slide to slide, and easy compatibility with Microsoft products.
  • Microsoft OneNote: This note-taking software allows you to create notes with text, drawings, tables, pictures, and other tools that make it easy to jot down any necessary information.
  • Microsoft Outlook: Known chiefly as an email platform for Office, Outlook also features tools that help with event scheduling and managing a calendar, tracking and assigning tasks across multiple users, storing and sharing contacts, and plenty of other helpful functions.

Compatibility and system requirements: Downloading and using Microsoft Office 2013 on Windows

Microsoft Office 2013 is compatible with Windows 7 through Windows 10, including Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2019. This is the final version of Microsoft Office that runs on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, so if you’re looking for the most recent version of Office that works with your older laptop – congrats, you found it!

Pros and cons: Should I choose a Microsoft Office 2013 license or access it through Microsoft 365?

The main difference between Microsoft Office 2013 for Windows and Microsoft 365 for Windows is that you pay once to own a license for Microsoft Office 2013 on a single device and will never need to make another payment. Microsoft 365 uses an ongoing subscription to access the products. If you choose Microsoft 365, you can access your work on any device since you create and save all your work on the OneDrive cloud. If you choose Microsoft Office 2013, you purchase a license for a single computer.
